Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions founders and CEOs ask most before starting coaching.
What does coaching mean?
Coaching is a structured partnership where a coach guides you through questions and feedback. You work together to clarify goals, spot blind spots and develop real leadership skills. At Heart in Leadership we focus on helping founders and CEOs build self-aware habits and clear plans. That way you can grow a business beyond yourself. Coaching mixes active listening and honest challenge to help you move from where you are to where you want to be.
About Leadership Coaching
What does a leadership coach do?
A leadership coach doesn't hand you a playbook or tell you what to do next. My role is to ask the questions that help you see the patterns you can no longer see on your own, and to help you build the capacity to lead differently from where you are now. It isn't about tactics or hacks — it's about becoming the leader your business now requires.
How do I know if I need a leadership coach?
If working harder isn't producing the growth it used to, if your team still brings every decision back to you, or if you're succeeding on paper but feel stretched thin and quietly stuck — that's usually a sign the bottleneck has shifted from strategy to leadership capacity. The Control Tax Audit is a free, 9-minute way to see exactly where that's showing up for you.
What is the difference between leadership coaching and business coaching?
Business coaching typically focuses on strategy, operations, and the mechanics of running the company. Leadership coaching focuses on you — the patterns, defaults, and identity behind how you lead — because at a certain stage, growth stops being limited by strategy and starts being limited by leadership capacity. That second problem is the one I work on.
What happens during a leadership coaching session?
Sessions are structured but conversational: regular 1:1 coaching, virtual or in-person, built around what's actually live for you right now — a decision, a pattern, a team dynamic — examined honestly rather than rushed past. Inside The Leadership Shift, sessions are supported by monthly Leadership Lab sessions for tools and frameworks, plus in-between support by email or voice note, so you're not carrying it alone between calls.
What does an executive coach do?
An executive coach works one-on-one with senior leaders to sharpen decision-making, communication and people skills. They ask tough questions, offer feedback and help you see patterns that may hold you back. At Heart in Leadership we support founders and CEOs in building a clear strategy, leading with confidence and creating healthy teams. This kind of focused guidance aims to free you from daily fires so you can steer your business toward lasting success.
Is an executive coach worth it?
Whether coaching is worth it depends on what you want to achieve and how ready you are to change. Good coaching can help you spot blind spots, grow as a leader and build a self-sustaining business. Many founders and CEOs see bigger returns when they act on honest feedback and follow clear plans. If you're committed to real change, your investment in coaching often pays off in stronger teams, smarter decisions and better growth.
What is the average cost of an executive coach?
Coaching fees vary widely based on experience, program length, and format — some coaches charge per session, others offer package rates. At Heart in Leadership, investment in The Leadership Shift is tailored rather than fixed to a single published number, because what's included depends on where you're starting from and what you need. We'll walk through pricing that fits your situation and goals on a Discovery Call, not before.
What are the four types of coaching?
Coaching usually breaks down into four main areas: career, performance, leadership and life coaching. Career coaching helps you plan job moves and growth steps. Performance coaching focuses on skills like time management and focus. Leadership coaching trains you in team building, decision-making and strategic vision. Life coaching aims at personal well-being, balance and relationships. Understanding these types helps you choose support that fits your current goals.
Founder Dependency
Why does my business still depend on me?
Usually because the habits that got you here — being the one who makes the call, catches the detail, holds the standard — were right for an earlier stage, and they never got replaced. The business kept your habits even after it outgrew them. That's not a flaw in you; it's the exact pattern The Leadership Shift is built to break.
How do I know if I am the bottleneck in my business?
You're not the bottleneck because you're bad at your job — you're the bottleneck because you're good at it. Signs include: your team still brings decisions back to you, you can't take a real week off without checking in, and "just make the call" hasn't actually stuck. The Control Tax Audit is a free 9-minute diagnostic that puts a real number on what staying in the middle of everything is costing you.
How do I stop being the bottleneck in my business?
It starts with seeing the specific pattern behind the control, not just handing off tasks. The Leadership Shift works it in three phases: Awaken (see the pattern and what it's costing you), Transform (lead from trust instead of fear), and Expand (create real conditions for your team to own outcomes, not just tasks) — ending with you becoming the leader who's no longer needed in the middle.
Delegation and Control
Why can't I delegate without checking everything?
Because delegating the task and trusting the outcome get treated as the same skill, and they're not. Handing off the task is easy; trusting what comes back is the harder, deeper shift — usually rooted in identity ("if I'm not across everything, am I even doing my job?") rather than a skills gap in your team. That's identity work, not a to-do-list fix.
How do I delegate without losing control?
The honest answer is you don't get to keep the old kind of control and delegate at the same time — you trade tight oversight for real ownership. That trade feels risky at first, but it's what lets a team actually grow into the decisions you're handing them, instead of just executing your instructions.
How do I stop micromanaging my team?
Micromanaging is rarely about doubting your team's competence — it's usually about not yet trusting the space between giving an instruction and seeing the outcome. The Leadership Shift's second phase, Transform, works directly on this: leading from trust rather than fear, and building your own tolerance for the space between stimulus and response.
Team Ownership
Why won't my team take ownership?
Often because ownership was never actually handed over — decisions still quietly route back to you, so your team has learned, accurately, that the real call gets made by someone else. Teams rise to the level of ownership they're actually given, not the level they're told they should have.
How do I get my team to make decisions without me?
You create the conditions for it deliberately, rather than hoping it happens on its own — which is the focus of The Leadership Shift's third phase, Expand: creating real conditions for ownership, examining the culture you're already (often unintentionally) creating, and practising becoming the leader who's no longer needed for every call.
Heart in Leadership
How does Heart in Leadership help founders who feel stuck?
By treating the feeling of being stuck as information, not a personal failing — asking what happened that makes your current pattern make sense, rather than jumping straight to what to do differently. From there, we build the capacity to lead differently: The Leadership Shift is the structured 4-month path, and the Control Tax Audit is a free first look at exactly where you're stuck.
What is the Control Tax?
The Control Tax is what staying in the middle of every decision is quietly costing you — in hours, in money, and in the decisions your team eventually stopped bringing you at all. It doesn't show up on a P&L; it shows up in the ceiling you can't get past. The Control Tax Audit is a free, 9-minute, 12-question diagnostic that puts a real number on it.
How long does leadership coaching take?
The signature program, The Leadership Shift, runs over four months — three phases, Awaken, Transform, and Expand, across nine steps. That's long enough for real change to take root, and structured enough to stay focused: this isn't an open-ended engagement, it's a defined path from trapped to free.
Who is Heart in Leadership for?
Founders 3 to 10 years in, leading a team, who are capable and already successful but have become the hub every decision still runs through. It's not for you if you're pre-team, or looking for a general productivity system — this is leadership work, not a time-management fix.
